ABSTRACT

This paper reviews studies on female figures in Late Qing and Republican pictorials, summarizing research based on case analysis and typological discussion. Case studies of Dianshizhai Pictorial, The Young Companion, and Beiyang Pictorial display evolving female social identities; thematic researches interpret cultural meanings of working, heroic, educated, fashionable, and public-space women. It points out insufficient studies on reading women, whose reflective visual images deserve further exploration.
