ABSTRACT

This article is devoted to the comparative study of a group of English words that appear to have possible lexical counterparts in Azerbaijani. Its main purpose is to identify, arrange, and examine these word pairs from semantic and phonetic perspectives, with special attention to inherited English vocabulary rather than later borrowings. At the present stage, the material should be regarded as preliminary, but it is intended to serve as a basis for a more extensive investigation in the future. The research is based on the view that words may pass through long periods of phonetic alteration, semantic development, and structural change, yet still preserve traces of earlier forms. From this standpoint, the article considers whether certain similarities between English and Azerbaijani lexical items may reflect older linguistic layers that deserve closer examination. The central idea is that individual words may retain elements of deeper historical meaning and form, and that these elements can become more visible through comparative analysis. The study, therefore, adopts a broad comparativist approach and evaluates the collected material as a field for further discussion rather than as a set of conclusions. The identification of such parallels may contribute not only to lexical and historical linguistics, but also to the study of cultural and historical relations as reflected in language. For this reason, the subject may be considered worthy of further scholarly attention.
