ABSTRACT

This study adopts critical discourse analysis in combination with corpus methods, focusing on Nikkei’s China-related economic discourse of the “China-U.S. trade war”. Using a framework of reported discourse, it explores the strategies, attitudes, and purposes underlying the use of reported discourse in Japanese media. The findings reveal that, while the media’s economic discourse on China appears objective, it subtly embeds discursive bias, reinforcing a U.S.-led Western-centric narrative and reflecting misrepresentation and prejudice toward China. Such discursive practices are shaped by major power relations, global structures, and Japan’s national development. The study highlights the significance of analyzing reported discourse in Japanese news discourse and underscores the value of language research that contributes to national interests.
