On the Impressionistic Aesthetics in “The Garden Party”

Katherine Mansfield utilizes impressionistic techniques in her famous short story “The Garden Party”, namely, light and color, impressions of the moment, and subjective reality. The employment of light and color contributes to create atmosphere, and contrast the brilliance of the Sheridans’ garden with the dim, muted tones of the workers’ cottages, thereby revealing class disparity. Through fleeting impressions of the moment, the narrative crystallizes transient experiences that display deeper truths about beauty, privilege, and suffering. Most importantly, Mansfield’s emphasis on subjective perception illustrates how reality is refracted through individual consciousness. The integration of such impressionistic techniques not only shapes the story’s impressionistic style, but also helps it better present the themes like moral awareness, social inequality, and life and death.
